Linguistic field research involves the firsthand audio and video recording of endangered languages and dialects, which forms a basis for further academic research. In order to proceed in an efficient manner, a vast amount of preparation is required. This includes determining the region and language or dialect to study, finding suitable native speakers to record, creating survey forms that allow the accurate elicitation of desired data, as well as the familiarizing of staff with audio-video equipment to ensure high quality recordings. Researchers ask and native speakers respond to material in the survey form while being recorded. The resultant survey recordings are preserved through standard procedures for use in future research.

The methods employed in field research are displayed here. Topics are divided into 'Field Research Preparation,' 'Survey Forms,' 'Procedure,' and 'Results Processing.' Also, an actual field research example is presented to show how the benefits of proper preparation are realized in the field.
